Our beautiful Taku Whānau Tree is a special craft that helps tamariki explore what family means to them.
This wooden family tree comes with individual leaf pieces for children to colour, decorate, and personalise with the names of their whānau. From parents and siblings to grandparents, cousins, and even special friends, each leaf becomes part of their unique family story.
Inspired by Pōhutukawa, the Matariki star connected to remembrance and connection, this activity gently encourages children to reflect on the people who are important in their lives — past and present — in a warm and positive way.
“Taku whānau” means my family, and this craft is all about celebrating those connections. Once complete, the tree becomes a meaningful keepsake that children can proudly display at home or in the classroom.
Perfect for Matariki learning - but can be used for any family tree type activity - this hands-on activity supports creativity and storytelling.
