How to make Scratch Art

If you’re looking for a fun and easy craft activity for Matariki, why not try scratch art? You only need a couple of ingredients!

And the best part is, you can scratch whatever shape you like! We’ve chosen stars to celebrate Matariki Rising.

You will need:

  • A sheet of square card
  • Scissors
  • A skewer or toothpick
  • Dishwashing liquid
  • Black paint
  • A wooden frame
  • Pens or paint to decorate frame

Instructions:

  1. First, half-fill a small container with dishwashing soap. Now double it up by adding the same quantity of black poster paint.
  2. Give it a good stir (we used a popsicle stick to stir it).
  3. Colour in on some card with regular wax crayons – choose bright colours!
  4. Paint over your crayon with the paint, dabbing to make sure it is covered. Leave it to dry completely, and if you need to, add another coat. If your paint is drying too slow, try leaving it a warm sunny spot. Note, it does take at least 30 minutes an hour to dry each coat of paint!
  5. Use a skewer to scratch off your design!
  6. Now to finish it off, cut around the design and place into a wooden photo frame and decorate.

Have you tried this craft? We’d love to see how it turned out!
