Booking Workshops:

Where can I find information about your classes?

For full details on each of our classes, have a look on our workshop page. The classes are divided into categories – such as ‘Homewares’ and ‘Kids’. There are full descriptions with photographs of each workshop.

You can also sign up to our newsletter on our home page and we will send you an email once a month with a list of classes for the coming four weeks.

We also publish our monthly schedules on our blog, so you can become a follower to see posts about all our classes.

How do I book?

You can book online using our workshop page by adding the number of people you would like to book for in the quantity field and then click ‘checkout’. You will receive a discount for bookings of more than one person on a class.

You can also book by calling into the shop and paying over the phone with your credit card.

Please note, your booking is not confirmed until we receive full payment from you. Once this is complete, we will send you a confirmation email and post you out an invitation.

Can I reserve a place on a class and pay later?

We can pencil your details into the class file, but your place will not be guaranteed until you pay. We do not reduce our numbers online, therefore someone else can still book your place. Some of our classes book up very quickly so it is recommended to pay straight away if you are certain you wish to attend.

I am unable to attend a workshop I enrolled upon. Am I entitled to a refund / can I reschedule?

We operate a strict cancellation policy for our workshop bookings please see each workshop for details on this. 

A full refund will be given if your workshop is cancelled by The Make Cafe for any reason, oryou can choose to attend an alternative workshop instead, space permitting.

 

Workshops – General Questions:

What do I need to bring for my class?

Most of our workshops are ‘all materials included’ unless otherwise specified in the workshop description. Therefore, all you need to bring is your lovely selves, enthusiasm and a little bit of creativity!

Oh, and if you fancy bringing a friend, you will each receive $5 of the cost of the workshop!

Can I bring my own sewing machine?

You are more than welcome to bring your own machine, in fact it is quicker and easier to sew on a machine you are used too! 

Don’t worry if you don’t have one. We usually provide machines as a standard part of the course.

How many students are on each class?

Our minimum is usually 6 but we can accommodate up to 12 people on some classes. The size of the class is usually dictated by difficulty level or the size of the project. For beginner’s classes or workshops where lots of space is needed (such as a quilting class), we try to keep our numbers between 6 and 8.

What is included in the cost of the workshop?

Most of our workshops are all inclusive, so included in the cost would be all materials and equipment needed, tuition provided by a skilled, experienced teacher, a hot/cold drink and something sweet to eat from our Cafe.

And plenty of good company, of course!

I’ve never sewn before. Which of your workshops would be suitable for an absolute beginner?

We run a great beginner’s sewing class called ‘Learn to Sew’, in which you will be shown how to use a sewing machine, cut fabric and sew in a straight line in order to produce a basic envelope style cushion cover. This is a great starting point for someone who has never touched a machine before.

If you’re not sure if a class is right for you, have a look at the ‘skill level’ specified in the workshops details. Usually this is a good indication of the experience required for each class. We try to define our workshops as ‘absolute beginner’ or ‘advanced beginner’ to make it clearer which are suitable for those with no experience at all.

 

Parties and Events – General Questions:

Do you host children’s birthday parties at The Make Cafe?

Yes, we host birthday parties for all ages! Send us an email enquiry to info@themakecompany.co.nz for full details of what's involved, our terms and conditions for booking and availability!

I am organising a hen party for a friend. What sort of activities could you suggest?

We can  organise a private workshop for you, choose from anything on our workshop menu, or we can try to accomodate a tailor made request via our bank of tutors

Can I hire out the space for a private function?

Yes, providing our space is available on the date you would like, we can hire our classroom space for a corporate or group event. 

Parties and Events – Booking:

How long in advance do you recommend I book my party/event?

As we require payment in advance for any party or event, it is recommended to give at least a week’s notice of a proposed booking. Since our space is often booked in advance for workshops and private events, it’s often a good idea to make your initial enquiry well in advance to secure the date you require.

We will try our very best to accommodate you on the date you specify, but this can be tricky with short notice!

Do I need to pay a deposit?

Yes, we require a $50 deposit as standard for any party, event or private workshop booking. This will then be deducted from the final amount owed.

Once your deposit has been paid (and for events that involve a workshop -when we have notified you the tutor will be available), we can confirm your booking.

The remaining balance needs to be paid in full at least 2 days prior to your event.

Is there a minimum number of people required to make a booking?

We require a minimum of 8 people for parties and 6 for private workshops 

Our maximum numbers vary depending on what is involved in the particular event. 

 

Fabric Shop:

If I bring a project I’m working on into the shop, would there be someone who could help and advise me?

All our Sales Assistants are passionate crafters and makers, each with their own particular interests and skills. Generally our staff will try their hand at anything creative! Therefore any of our staff in the shop would be happy to try their best to be of help to you. Please do bear in mind that they also need to be available to help other customers and serve at the till so may have limited time if the shop is very busy!

Can I hire a sewing machine or overlocker?

Yes you can! We have Singer sewing machines and an overlocker available to hire at any time, for a cost of $10 per hour. It’s gernerally a good idea to give us a call before you call into the shop so we can have a machine set up and ready to go when you arrive!

Do you have a minimum amount you will cut fabric?

Our minimum cut is 25cm or a fat quarter. Our fabrics our available in 25cm increments, so the next size up from the minimum would be 50cm (1/2m).

Is there somewhere my children can play while I shop?

We have a children’s play area in the shop, We ask that you stay close by when your children are playing and tidy the toys away before you leave, so other children can enjoy the play area too.

Where can I park my car?

We have plenty of parking around us, 6 spaces down the right hand side of our building and a further 3 communal parking spaces opposite that, in the evening time the entire area is available for parking.

 

Online shopping:

What quantities do you sell fabric in?

Our fabric is priced by the metre. However, you can make purchases in increments of 1/4m. So for example, if your project requires 2.75m; then add 2 and 3/4 to your basket. Our website will automatically calculate the price when you checkout. Alternatively, we can also accomodate purchases of just 1 fat quarter should you prefer your fabric to be cut like this.  Further information describing how your fabric will be cut can be obtained by hovering your mouse over "What is a metre?" and "What is a fat quarter?" on the product page when viewing fabric on this site.   

Do you offer an online reward programme for frequent online purchases?

Yes we offer a loyalty programme if you sign up

A product I would like to purchase is out of stock. Will you be receiving more, and if not can you order it in for me?

Sometimes we do run out of our popular products. When this happens, a field will appear below the product name which says "Notify me when this comes back in stock".  If you are an existing customer and you are logged in, you can click on this button to receive an automated email notification once we receive more stock and it has been loaded on our website.

However, alot of the fabrics we stock are from designers who usually only print a limited amount of any of their designs. If you are looking for a fabric which is no longer in print, you are welcome to send us an email to info@themakecafe.co.nz and we will let you know whether we can source more for you!

I don’t live in New Zealand. Do you ship internationally?

Yes we do. Our international shipping costs are estimates only and you will be refunded any difference in postage costs after ordering if your items weigh less than the designated amount specified by New Zealand Post.

I buy large quantities of fabric from you on a regular basis. Do you have any incentives for customers like me?

For customers who buy large quantities of fabric or run a business and buy from us regularly, we can sell fabric to you at a wholesale price. Please contact our team at info@themakecafe.co.nz for more details.

I would like to buy a sewing machine, but I don’t live in Christchurch. Can you ship it directly to me?

We certainly can. Our machines are sent direct to you from our Singer distributer in Auckland. Please note, postage and packaging is free on all sewing machines.  In addition, if you can find the same sewing machine for cheaper elsewhere, please let us know and we will do our best to provide you with a better deal.
